3 Tips for Crossborder Shipping into Mexico

March 21, 2023

Thanks to free-trade arrangements between Mexico and the US, the demand for crossborder trucking services is on the rise, with billions being spent in this sector alone.

However, if you’re new to overland transportation going international, you might not know the different regulations and steps in place to get loads moved without incurring extra fees or experiencing delays.

In this post, we discuss crossborder trucking into Mexico, and the basics you need to get started.

  1. US Trucks Can’t Cross Into Mexico

One of the biggest factors to know is that US trucks must stop at the Mexican border, but cannot be driven to the final destination by the US carrier.

After processing and approval, the trailer will be handed over to a Mexican carrier for the remainder of the delivery.

You’ll need to choose the best type of service for the handover: transloading or through-trailer. Transloading is a bit more time consuming, because the cargo must be unloaded from one trailer and loaded onto another.

A through-trailer means the cargo doesn’t budge, since the same trailer changes hands. Not only does this save time, but it also reduces the risk of damages.

  1. You Need the Right Documents

Crossing international borders requires a whole new set of documents. For Mexico, this includes certifications, registration forms, and proof of an insurance policy.

After registering your truck, you’ll be required to show that you have paid the Mexican taxes and fees, while also proving that you have no outstanding balances.

You’ll also need to show that you’ve been active for a certain period of time, typically six months or more. Regulations change, so always check with the Department of Transportation (DOT) to stay on top of the latest developments.

  1. There are 3PLs to Help

Feeling overwhelmed? Remember, you don’t have to go at it alone! There are 3PL companies that can help you plan the logistics of your cross border shipment. They’ll guide you through the paperwork and processing, ensuring you have everything needed to save time and money.

You can also find the equipment and expertise for specialized freight and heavy haul. Sometimes, the peace of mind is worth it!
